Boxer’s Olympic dream

Olympic Games to be held in London.
The Zimbabwe-born boxer, who is in the country has been doing well in the UK. He has competed in several competitions including the ABA novice and Championships for Young People among other tournaments.

Muchapondwa said he is determined to represent the nation in next year’s global sporting showcase.
“I am here to see what opportunities are there to represent Zimbabwe in the Olympics, I am here to try and qualify for the Games. I have been into boxing since I was 16 years old. I started as a way of losing weight but I realised that I was talented.

“I took part in the Amateur Boxing championships in the United Kingdom and I won the tournament and it was my first time to become a champion.
“Last year I managed to get into the Championships for Young People and this year I competed in the Senior Championships and I managed to reach the semi-finals, ” said Muchapondwa.
The 18-year-old had a meeting with Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association chairman, Lovemore Malianga last Friday to discuss the way forward.

“I met Mr Malianga over the issue. I am returning to the UK on the 24th of August but I will be back for the qualifiers. I think I have got the talent and determination. I am very enthusiastic about the sport and I have been competing in some of the best amateur competitions,” said Muchapondwa.

However, the upcoming boxer has never represented Zimbabwe in any competition.
“I was born here and I moved to the UK in December 2004,” said Muchapondwa.

Malianga said the qualifiers are scheduled to start as soon as the All-Africa Games are over.
“We will be informed after the All-Africa Games where the qualifiers will be held and it is likely to be either Botswana or Namibia. We are definitely going to the qualifiers and I have met him

(Muchapondwa). I have seen his profile and he is a potential boxer. We would have wanted him to compete in the National Youth Games,” said Malianga.
