BOXING enthusiasts in Harare and its environs will today witness 15 bouts featuring Zimbabwe’s finest amateur fighters at Motor Action Sports Club.
Dubbed “The Ultimate Boxing Tournament” is a brainchild of Team Shumba UK in association with Shumba Boxing Academy.
Shumba Boxing Academy is led by Zimbabwe Light Heavyweight champion Wesley McDade while Team Shumba UK is led by UK-based boxer Mac Pemhiwa.
Outlining their vision, Pemhiwa said the tournament was meant to unearth new boxers as well as fight drug and substance abuse.
“The two teams came together in an agreement in 2020, with a common goal to develop the youth and sport through grassroots levels which began by putting their vision to work.
“In December 2021, they launched the first Ultimate Knockout Boxing tournament which attracted acted boxers and clubs from around the country. The tournament was a great success.
“In 2022 the second UKBTZW was held as the national championships and drew in even more contestants from around the country.”
Pemhiwa, who has worked with the youths in the UK and Zimbabwe over the years, believes the tournament will help in fighting drug and substance abuse.
“The tournament is a non-profit event and is a fundraiser towards the development of the Shumba Boxing
Academy, its amateur boxers, and their future preparations towards international boxing championships.
“Fifty percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Harare Children’s Home, towards the repairs of their two blocks that were unfortunately destroyed due to an inferno that has affected the children’s living conditions.
“With so many of the youth unemployed, the tournament also raises awareness against drug abuse #SAY NO To Drugs and is aimed at creating an inspired hope for young boys and girls to consider fitness/boxing as a wellness way of life.”
The tournament, which consists of 15 boxers is scheduled for three rounds of three minutes each.
“Winners of each weight category will be recognized as the Ultimate Boxing Champion.
“The tournament has been sanctioned by the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation. A male doctor and ambulance will be made available onsite for safety reasons.
“There will be a short presentation on drug abuse awareness by Dr Dewa and the support lines available to assist those in need
“The thirty fighters selected for this tournament will be evaluated and matched based on their age, weight, skill level, and fight record,” he said.
