A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy has died in a horrifying gas explosion that ripped through a homestead in Kenzamba, Chinhoyi, after a man tried to repair a gas tank next to an open fire.
According to police, the tragic incident occurred ON 7 October 2025, when a 45-year-old man attempted to fix a leaking gas cylinder while sitting dangerously close to flames. Disaster struck the moment he opened the tank — it exploded with a deafening blast, engulfing everyone nearby in flames.
“The ZRP is investigating a case of culpable homicide which occurred in Kenzamba, Chinhoyi, on 07/10/25. A 45-year-old man allegedly attempted to fix a gas tank while seated close to an open fire. Upon opening the gas tank, it exploded, resulting in serious burns to four individuals, including the suspect,” national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said in a statement.
Among the victims was a three-year-old boy who sustained severe burns. He was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect and the other injured victims are receiving treatment for burn injuries.
Police have urged members of the public to exercise extreme caution when handling gas appliances and to never attempt repairs near open flames.
“This tragic incident could have been avoided. People must ensure gas tanks are serviced by qualified technicians and handled in safe environments,” Comm Nyathi warned.
