A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy died after he fell into a sewer mains in Harare’s, Park View suburb.
His body was swept down the sewer for about 5km to Crowborough sewage treatment plant.
Kupakwashe Majoka was playing with two friends outside his family house in Park View, which is opposite Crowborough North, at around 9am on Wednesday when he slipped into a hole that was dug near their house in 2014 by Harare City Council officials who were replacing sewage pipes.
The hole is about 40 metres away from the house.
His body was later retrieved after being swept away to the treatment plant and it was taken to a local hospital mortuary for post mortem.
In an interview yesterday, the boy’s father, Mr MacDonald Majoka, who is employed by the Harare City Council traffic section, said he received a call, while he was at work. He rushed home and found the Harare Fire Brigade making efforts to rescue the boy, but to no avail.
A house maid, Ms Norah Matanga (21), said: “We woke up around 8am and I gave him some porridge before he informed me that he was going outside to play with his friends.
“I remained inside the house doing some house chores and a few minutes later one of his friends came running and informed me about the incident.”
Ms Matanga went to investigate and failed to locate Kupakwashe, who had already been swept away. She told some neighbours about the accident and later made a report to the police who are now conducting investigations.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he was yet to get the details of the case.
