Brazil, which hosts the biggest population of the African diaspora, yesterday hoisted its flag and planted a tree at the Liberation City housing the Museum of African Liberation in Harare.

The South American country became the fifth country outside Africa to have its flag at the site where national flags of all the 55 African countries are flying.

Other international friends of the African struggle like Cuba, Russia, China and Switzerland already have their national flags flying.

Speaking after the ceremony, Brazil’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Vilamar Rogeiro Coutinho Junior said it was a pleasure and honour to plant the tree and to raise their national flag.

“It is a way of showing how Brazil respects the liberation struggle of the whole of Africa. Half of our population is of African descent and we are very proud of it and that’s what made our culture so rich and so diverse,” said Mr Coutinho.

Institute of African Knowledge chief executive Ambassador Kwame Muzawazi said the gesture symbolised a beginning of a new start.
