Brazil’s Secretary for Africa and the Middle East in the Ministry of External Relations, Ambassador Carlos Duarte arrived in the country yesterday for a two-day visit for political consultations between the two countries.
Speaking to journalists upon his arrival at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, Ambassador Duarte said the meeting will be the first round of consultations between Brazil and Zimbabwe.
Acting Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ambassador Rofina Chikava will lead Zimbabwe’s delegation in the talks.
“We have a whole array of issues that we are going to discuss during these consultations. We have an important cooperation programme with Zimbabwe we will emphasise even more and we will also discuss main issues of the international agenda and the bilateral agenda.
“Brazil is currently chairing the G20, for example, and we have issues that are important for developing countries in general and I think they will also come up for discussion between Zimbabwe and Brazil,” ambassador Duarte said.
In a statement earlier, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Mr Michael Mukura also confirmed the agenda of the visit.
“This will be the inaugural Session of the Political Consultations between the two countries since Zimbabwe and Brazil established diplomatic relations in 1980.
“The Political Consultations will focus on bilateral relations, regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest between our two countries. Zimbabwe and Brazil enjoy excellent co-operation in many areas, including on trade and investment, with special cooperation in agriculture and livestock production.
“The Brazilian delegation will also take the opportunity to tour the National Heroes Acre and the Museum of African Liberation,” he said.
