adminAccording to a report published by Eletronuclear, the country’s nuclear agency, the plants of the Almirante Alvaro Alberto complex, known as Angra 1 and Angra 2, have some characteristics which grant them a “more favorable situation” in case of severe natural disasters.
Among those characteristics are a second emergency backup system installed in a secure area, as well as equipment which does not require electric energy to carry out the cooling of the reactors in case electricity is lost.
“The Brazilian society paid more to have this system,” Eletronuclear’s adviser Paulo Carneiro said about this advantage. Another advantage is that Brazil’s southeastern region, where the Angra complex is located, is not prone to earthquakes or tsunamis like Japan. However, the town of Angra dos Reis suffers from storms and large mudslides during summer.
According to Eletronuclear’s report, the nuclear power plants are also safe against those disasters. Additional safety measures will be implemented to increase protection against flooding. The Angra 1 and Angra 2 plants have a combined capacity of some 2,000 megawatts. Brazil’s third nuclear power plant, Angra 3, is under construction and will be located in the same complex.
