A fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday morning, causing extensive damage to popular Bulawayo restuarant, Fairy Cafè, which is located in the central business district.

According to the city’s Chief Fire Officer, Mr Mhlangano Moyo, the blaze is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical or appliance-related fault after something was left switched on overnight.

Mr Moyo said the fire started during the night and was only noticed in the early hours.

“There was extensive damage to Fairy Cafè along Fife Street and 13th Avenue. Something was left on. The fire started in the night and was seen at around 3 or 4am, but we managed to contain it,” he said.

Firefighters attended the scene promptly and were able to prevent the flames from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

No injuries had been reported by the time emergency services completed their initial assessment, although the cafe sustained heavy interior damage.

Authorities are expected to carry out further investigations to determine the exact cause of the fire, while business owners in the area have been urged to ensure all electrical appliances are switched off when closing premises at night.
