Former Dynamos captain and Zimbabwe Warriors tough-tackling right-back Angirayi Chapo has died.
Chapo, affectionately nicknamed “The Durawall” for his no-nonsense defending, died on Tuesday at his home in Mufakose.
He was part of an intimidating Dynamos defence that had goalkeeper Peter Fanuel, Francis Shonhayi and Henry
Chari as centre backs with the roving Stanley Chirambadare as the left-back.
Chapo was part of the Warriors team that agonisingly missed out on an Africa Cup of Nations qualification for the 1992 tournament when Zimbabwe drew 2-2 against Congo Brazzaville at the National Sports Stadium in a qualifier in 1991.
Chapo joined Dynamos in 1984 after being lured by former Glamour Boys midfielder Clayton Munemo.
He rose to become captain and earned a place in the national team for his tough defending and incisive overlapping.
Chapo, Munemo, former captain Memory Mucherahohwa, Simon Chuma, the late Gift Mpariwa and the
Mangwiro brothers Taurai and Nyaro were some of the Mufakose boys who found home at DeMbare and made names for themselves playing for the Harare club.
