BULAWAYO development rugby benefactor and businessman, Shasha Gomez is reportedly vying for the office of vice president (Southern) of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union during elections slated for May 25 in the capital.
Reliable information reaching this publication suggests that Gomez, who has been a friend of the development of the sport in the region for a while, was recently approached by several people involved with the sport who reportedly prefer him to represent the region. However, Martin Shone, who holds the post, is reportedly eager to contest again this year for the same post.
Through his energy concern, Consha Holdings, Gomez has been funding various rugby development projects since 2015 and is considered one of the key stakeholders in rugby development both within the region and beyond.
B Metro had several conversations with reliable sources within the Bulawayo rugby world and confirmed that Gomez has indeed accepted the nomination and will stand for the VP’s post in the elections.

“Many of us have been following what he has been doing for rugby in the province and we know that he can replicate it nationally if he is elected ZRU vice president (Southern). We know that the corporate world will identify with him as will everyone involved with rugby,” said a source in the Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board.
“We have seen him working with the Under-20s in the province for a very long time now. He’s also sponsored Milton High School and held out a hand to his former school, Cristian Brothers College as well. Shasha has been bailing us out financially and materially in the province for a while now so it only makes sense that he be our candidate for the VP office,” added the source.
Speaking exclusively to B Metro, Gomez revealed that he was still in consultation with family, friends and key rugby stakeholders both locally and nationally and will soon issue an official statement addressing his participation in the upcoming elections.
“All I can say at the moment is that indeed I have been approached to serve the sport at a national level but I am still in consultation with friends and family as well as key stakeholders in the region especially. Very soon I will issue a press statement addressing my participation in this year’s ZRU elections,” Gomez told B Metro.
