The High Court has thrown out jailed businessmen Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe’s application to appeal their convictions and sentences at the Supreme Court, ruling that its judgement was proper.

In a judgment released this evening, Justice Pisirayi Kwenda said the trial court followed sentencing guidelines.

He said if there was any error, it actually favoured the accused.

Justice Kwenda also noted that the State accepted the sentences.

“The applications for leave to appeal are dismissed in both applications,” Justice Kwenda ruled.

Mpofu and Chimombe were convicted of defrauding the Government of more than US$7 million under the Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme.

They are serving sentences of 17 years and 12 years respectively.
