Dynamos legend and former vice-chairman of the Glamour Boys board of directors Freddy Mkwesha has died.
He was 74.
Mkwesha, who was arguably one of the finest players to emerge from Zimbabwe died early this morning after a long battle with diabetes.
At the time of his death, Mkwesha was now working as advisor to the Dynamos board. DeMbare president Kenny Mubaiwa confirmed the death and said funeral arrangements were still being made.
Mkwesha collapsed on Thursday last week and was admitted at Harare Hospital where he finally lost the battle.
Mkwesha is celebrated as the first black Zimbabwean to play professional football in Europe after signing for Sporting de Bragga in Portugal in 1966 where he played in the same league with legend Eusebio’s Benfica.
He later returned home and coached Harare giants Dynamos and CAPS United. Dynamos president Mubaiwa said the club was saddened with the death.
“We have learnt with sadness of Mr Mkwesha’s death. We were told he died around 7:00am in the morning after battling diabetes. The last time I spoke to his family they were still deliberating on the funeral arrangements,” said Mubaiwa.
