FORMER Bulawayo councillor, prominent businessman and liberation struggle supporter, Alderman Mohamed Hassen Esat, has died.
Ald Esat, a respected civic leader and entrepreneur, died on Sunday, and was widely known for his contribution to Bulawayo’s development through public service, business and community initiatives.
He served as a City of Bulawayo councillor representing ZANU-PF, where he became one of the strongest advocates for the Lake Gwayi-Shangani project, a strategic national undertaking designed to provide a lasting water solution for Bulawayo and the wider Matabeleland region.
Beyond politics, Ald Esat was at the helm of the family-owned HM Esat and Sons, popularly known as Esats Stores, a business that has maintained a retail presence in Bulawayo for more than a century and remains one of the city’s most recognisable enterprises.
In recognition of his contribution to business and community development, Ald Esat received the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
