POLICE have confirmed that a horrific road traffic accident involving members of the Highlanders Football Club executive occurred along the Bulawayo–Harare Highway on Thursday evening.

According to preliminary reports, the vehicle carrying the club officials was involved in a multi-vehicle collision involving a bus and three other vehicles.

Speaking to Zimpapers, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he could not immediately confirm the identities of the officials involved or the extent of their injuries, as police were still attending the scene.
“I can confirm that a horrific accident has occurred along the Bulawayo–Harare Highway and police are attending the scene. We understand that some people are trapped in the wreckage, but we will provide further details later tonight,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

He also expressed concern over the conduct of some members of the public, social media users and media practitioners who were circulating unverified information about the accident.

“We are appalled by the behaviour of some members of the public who are distributing horrific pictures and videos from the accident scene. Instead of assisting the police and the victims, they are busy taking photographs and recording videos while spreading unverified information on social media,” he said.

“We appeal to members of the public to desist from such irresponsible behaviour. Whether you are a social media influencer, a journalist or anyone else, people should refrain from conducting themselves in this manner.”

The Highlanders officials are believed to have been travelling from Kariba, where the club lost 1-0 to ZPC Kariba in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match on Wednesday afternoon.
