ZIMBABWE defeated Bangladesh by 151 runs on day four of the first cricket Test in Sylhet on Tuesday to record only their third away win in the prolonged version of the game since the country gained Test status in 1992.
It was also Zimbabwe’s first win in Test cricket since September 2013, the last triumph in this format of the game having last been achieved in the second Test against Pakistan at Harare Sports Club. Only three Zimbabwean players were part of that team which beat Pakistan, these being Brendan Taylor who was the captain then, current skipper Hamilton Masakadza and pace bowler Tendai Chatara.
Before Tuesday, Stuart Carlisle had been the last Zimbabwean captain to lead the team to a win in Test cricket away from home and it was also against Bangladesh. Zimbabwe won that second Test in Chittagong by eight wickets in November 2001.
Leg spinner Brandon Mavuta Brandon Mavuta picked up four wickets for 21 runs in 10 overs, two of them being maidens while off break bowler Sikandar Raza took three for 41. Left arm spinner Wellington Masakadza collected two wickets for 33 runs in 5.1 overs to hand Zimbabwe victory. Bangladesh, in pursuit of 321 to win the first Test were bowled out for 169.
Left hander Sean Williams was named man of the match for scoring 108 runs in the Test.
The second Test between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe will run from 11-15 November at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka.
