Despite his global success, Grammy-winning producer, Brian Soko remains intentional about representing Zimbabwe on the world stage.
Soko said that while he often tailors his sound to fit the needs of international artists, his identity is reflected in his professionalism and approach to music-making.
In an interview with Zimpapers, Soko believes that this connection to home is most evident in his upcoming project, “The Long Way Home,” which will exclusively feature Zimbabwean artists a passion project he describes as deeply personal.
“My identity and my roots are reflected more in how I conduct myself and my professionalism. As far as sound, I’ve mostly had to cater to what the artist was looking for and try to find a way to add a bit of my own spin on it.
“That’s why my project “The Long Way Home” that I’ve been working on is so special to me. I get to do a project for Zimbabwe with all Zimbabwean artists, and I couldn’t be more excited,” he said.
Best known for his work on Beyoncé’s chart-topping hit “Drunk in Love,” Soko’s journey has since expanded into a rich catalogue of collaborations with some of the biggest names in the industry.
He has worked with international heavyweights such as Lil Wayne, Drake, Future, Jay-Z and Chris Brown just to mention a few collaborations that have not only elevated his global profile but also sharpened his versatility as a producer.
Closer to home, Soko has played a pivotal role in shaping sounds across the African music landscape, working with South African stars like K.O., Cassper Nyovest and the late AKA, as well as fellow Zimbabweans like Jah Prayzah, Nutty O and Gemma Griffiths.
“I’ve been blessed to work with the likes of Lil Wayne, Drake, Future, Jay Z, Chris Brown etc. internationally to name a few and closer to home I’ve been able to work with K.O., Cassper Nyovest, AKA, Jah Prayzah, Nutty O & Gemma.
“I’ve worked with so many different artists and I try to learn something from each one, whether it’s their writing style or their process in the studio and I would like to think maybe a few of the newer artists have picked up some techniques from me,” he said.
One of his current standout collaborations is with Mystic Marley, granddaughter of reggae legend Bob Marley.

“It’s been great we met during Covid and have been working together ever since. She’s very talented and we complement each other well.
“It’s also a new experience for me in being able to help a new artist find and shape their sound so I can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’ve been working on. Soko is working on new music featuring Julian King set to be released end of month.
Titled “Doro NeRudo,” the song love and breakup up song that explores how love and alcohol goes hand in hand. “Doro NeRudo” is an Afro beat love/breakup song by about how love & liquor seem to always go hand in hand. It’s an up-tempo song that everyone can sing along and dance to.”
Soko is also focused on discovering and nurturing the next generation of talent.
“I’m also developing some new talent and am always looking for new artists to build with and potentially mentor. It’s a bit early to speak about it but hopefully the next superstar is reading this article and will get in touch with me.”
