This year marks the 10th anniversary of Santa Comes to Makokoba, a community initiative founded by arts practitioner Lewis Ndlovu through his non-profit organisation, Drums of Peace, to bring festive cheer to children in Bulawayo’s oldest high-density suburb.
A lifelong resident of Makokoba, Ndlovu understands the challenges faced by families in the community.
Having grown up and raised his own family in the suburb, he was inspired to create an initiative that would give children an opportunity to experience the joy of Christmas, despite the economic hardships many families face.
What started as a small celebration for a handful of children has gradually grown into a major community event, attracting support from residents and well-wishers across Bulawayo.
As the initiative reaches its 10th anniversary, organisers are hoping to make this year’s edition particularly memorable. The celebrations are scheduled for December 22 in Makokoba.
Ndlovu plans to host a fun-filled day for approximately 60 children, with activities, a meal, food hampers and Christmas gifts among the planned highlights.
Members of the public, businesses and well-wishers are being encouraged to support the initiative through financial or in-kind donations to help make the celebrations a success.
Those interested in contributing can contact Ndlovu on +263 772 719 412 or HHT on +263 772 851 609. Organisers also have a list of required items that can be shared with potential in-kind donors. International payment options are available for those wishing to contribute from outside Zimbabwe.
With preparations under way, the organisers are appealing for collective support to ensure that the 10th anniversary of Santa Comes to Makokoba brings happiness and lasting memories to the children it was established to serve.
