BUSY LIZZIE, scientifically known as impatiens, is an ornamental plant belonging to the balsaminaceae family.
It originates from East Africa, stretching from Kenya to Mozambique.
Other common names include patient plant, sultana or sultana’s pride.
This charming plant grows between 15 and 60 centimetres tall, with semi succulent leaves and stems. All parts of the plant — leaves, stems, flowers and roots — are soft and easily damaged, yet its colourful, long-lasting blooms make it a favourite among gardeners and plant enthusiasts.
Busy lizzie thrives both as a bedding plant and in containers, though it is an annual and must be replaced after each season.
You can plant busy lizzie in a single colour or mix different varieties for a vibrant display.
As a tropical herbaceous plant, it enjoys being well-watered but not waterlogged, since excess moisture can lead to fungal infections. It grows best in dappled shade, preferring morning sun to the harsher afternoon rays.
Although it can tolerate light frost, it should not be planted too early in the rainy season.
Regular removal of old leaves and dead flowers keeps the plant tidy. The more it is fed, the more it produces flowers.
While generally easy to maintain, busy lizzie can be affected by pests such as aphids and slugs and diseases like grey mould (botrytis) and downy mildew.
A broad spectrum fungicide such as bravo can help protect the plant. Propagation is simple, either through cuttings or seeds, which germinate readily.
Sometimes new plants even appear spontaneously where seeds have dropped and these can be transplanted to preferred locations.
Regular pinching of dead flower heads prolongs the plant’s life and encourages fresh blooms. With its dazzling colours, ease of care and cheerful presence, busy lizzie is a delightful addition to any garden.
