Brito, Prince disagree on PSL strikers

AT a time when Chicken Inn head coach Prince Matore feels the current crop of strikers lack the zeal of working extra hard all in an effort to improve on their goal scoring antics, Highlanders gaffer Baltemar Brito has argued otherwise.

With the ongoing Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season having been punctuated by lack of goals, Matore was of the view that the league’s forwards are failing to emulate yesteryear greats who usually conducted individual training sessions all in an effort to sharpen their technical abilities and then translate it on the field of play.

However, Brito said there was also a need to celebrate the defending and goalkeeping capabilities of players in other camps.

“When we speak of the number of goals, teams have proved to be equally competitive. Us as a team, we are not worried about our strikers.

“We are not under pressure, we are happy. It doesn’t reflect badly. Last weekend against Black Rhinos we didn’t score more goals because their goalkeeper did well.

“It’s not all about our strikers not delivering but we should praise talent from other teams. It’s not a problem that the league has not witnessed more goals,” said Brito who boasts of a mean defence.

Bosso have only conceded four goals.

With 19 games having played so far, none of the 18 PSL clubs has exceeded the 25 goal mark.

Manica Diamonds are the most prolific team in the league with 25 goals and are followed by Dynamos on 24. Ngezi Platinum Stars and Bulawayo Chiefs have found the back of the nets 23 times apiece.

Herentals are on 21 goals.

Bottom placed Black Rhinos have scored the least, with nine goals to their name. Premiership new boys Sheasham have also found the target nine teams.
