Brushing away stereotypes: National gallery spotlights female creativity

Today, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) in Bulawayo will host its annual “Invest in Women” event, dedicated to celebrating women in the visual arts sector.

Inspired by the changing themes of the United Nations Women’s International Day, this exhibition that kicks off in the morning, will showcase a diverse array of artistic works, including mixed media, video art and drawings.

Curated by Doris Kamupira and student intern Jule Welling, the event will feature an ensemble of female artists.

Silenkosi Moyo, the NGZ in Bulawayo regional manager initiated this project in 2021 with the objective of strengthening young women’s digital art-making and promotion skills. Supported by the Canadian Embassy, this initiative gave rise to the brand Vital Voices, emphasising the importance of women in all aspects of life.

Moyo expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This is a project that began with the selection of 20 women who used art to address harmful social norms faced by women and girls. Since then, the event has become an annual celebration, attracting female artists from various regions and partnering with organisations like UN Women Harare, Msasa Arts Project and ALWN.”

Highlighting the significance of the programme, Moyo said it aligns with International Women’s Day and aims to address challenges in achieving gender parity in the visual arts value chain.

“As an institution, the gallery recognises the need for increased efforts in achieving gender parity, placing a strong emphasis on empowering and promoting women artists,” she said.

She said the event which aims to create a local narrative, reflecting the unique experiences and aspirations of women in the community will feature esteemed speakers including participating artists –Andile Gwebu, Zandile Masuku, Andiswa B Matobo, Kimberly Bumhira, Luness Mpunwa, Sinqobile S Dube, Mandisa N Nyoni, Tendai Mandira, Linda L Msebele and Bokani Tahidzu among others.

“Board members of the gallery will also be present to offer their support and expertise,” Moyo said.
