Bubi women empower themselves through Village Business Units

BUBI District in Matabeleland North Province, which is traditionally known for its gold-rich terrain and largely informal mining economy, is witnessing a transformation to a more sustainable way of life, thanks to the introduction of Village Business Units (VBUs).

The VBUs have empowered women in the district, enabling them to provide for their families and break free from reliance on gold panning.

Pollands Village business unit was established in 2024 and has since brought positive impact to women farmers in Bubi District.

Agricultural business advisory officer, Ms Cynthia Nkomo, responsible for assisting members of the Pollands VBU in ward 15, shared the success story of these 86 farmers during an interview with Sunday News, saying the whole village is benefitting from Pollands Village business unit.

“On 17 March 2026, the farmers distributed proceeds from their garden produce sales, totalling US$2800.They also donated 10kg of maize meal to each household in the village.

“The women, who previously struggled with hunger and uncertainty, are now planning to drill a borehole for their second garden without external sponsorship,” Ms Nkomo said.

She also highlighted their investments in branding and purchasing of T-shirts and sunhats for all farmers in that business unit.

Mrs Judith Moyo, one of the farmers, expressed her joy at being able to support her husband in providing for their family.

“Previously, all responsibilities lay solely with my husband, but now I’m easing the load by contributing to our groceries with my VBU earnings,” she said.

A widow, who preferred anonymity, is grateful for the financial support.
“I use my crop sales to pay school fees and buy necessities, reducing our expenses since we get vegetables from the VBU,” she shared.

Miss Nontobeko Moyo is excited about her financial independence.
“Getting a job is tough, especially with poor grades, but these village business units are a blessing. We can sustain ourselves and be financially independent through crop sales,” she said.

The women’s progress showcases the impact of VBUs in rural communities. As they thrive, they’re poised to contribute significantly to achieving Vision 2030, bringing economic stability and prosperity to Bubi District.
