THE Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) and Victoria Falls Stock Exchange (VFEX) are stepping up efforts to deepen the country’s capital markets and unlock new investment opportunities through an inaugural financial markets stakeholder summit scheduled for Bulawayo next week.

The two exchanges will host the Financial Markets Stakeholder Summit from 10-11 November bringing together key players across the financial services industry to explore strategies for strengthening Zimbabwe’s investment landscape and expanding the role of capital markets in economic development.

The summit, running under the theme, “Shaping the Future of Zimbabwe’s Financial Markets: Connecting Capital, Innovation and Opportunity”, comes as Zimbabwe seeks to broaden its sources of investment financing, strengthen financial intermediation and mobilise long-term capital to support industrial expansion and economic transformation.

The initiative is expected to provide an important platform for examining how the country’s capital markets can become more responsive to the financing requirements of businesses while creating additional opportunities for investors seeking diversified investment instruments.

In a statement to Zimpapers Business Hub, the ZSE said the conference would bring together key participants in Zimbabwe’s financial markets, including stockbrokers, investment managers, regulators, issuers, institutional investors and other market stakeholders.

“The conference will bring together key participants in Zimbabwe’s financial markets, including stockbrokers, investment managers, regulators, issuers, institutional investors and other market stakeholders,” said the ZSE.

The gathering is expected to facilitate discussions on developments shaping the financial markets, with participants exchanging experiences, sharing insights and exploring opportunities to accelerate sectoral growth and innovation.

“The event is intended to provide a platform for participants to engage with developments in the financial markets, share insights and experiences, and explore opportunities for the continued growth, innovation and development of Zimbabwe’s financial markets.”

The summit comes at an important time when capital markets are increasingly recognised as critical channels for mobilising savings and channelling resources towards productive investment.

A deeper and more diversified financial market can provide companies with alternative funding avenues beyond traditional bank lending, enabling businesses to raise capital for expansion, infrastructure development, technology upgrades and new productive capacity.

Strengthening the capital markets also presents opportunities to attract institutional savings, encourage broader investor participation and improve access to investment instruments across different sectors of the economy.

The ZSE and VFEX occupy complementary positions in this process, providing platforms through which companies can access capital and investors can participate in listed securities.

The VFEX, in particular, offers a foreign-currency-denominated investment platform, while the ZSE remains an established avenue for equity and other capital market investments.

Bringing stakeholders from across the financial services ecosystem together in Bulawayo is also expected to raise the city’s profile as a destination for major business and investment engagements.

The summit provides an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between market regulators, financial intermediaries, listed companies and institutional investors, particularly in identifying constraints and opportunities affecting the development of Zimbabwe’s investment ecosystem.

The inaugural gathering provides an opportunity to build consensus on the future direction of Zimbabwe’s financial markets while positioning capital markets as an increasingly important driver of investment, enterprise development and economic growth.
