BULAWAYO Athletics Board chairperson Watson Madanyika has urged long distance runners to register for the new Buddie Beats ‘‘Run The beat’’ Virtual Marathon to be held next month.
The inaugural edition of the marathon sponsored by mobile network operator Econet will take place on December 12.
“We really appreciate the support we are getting from Econet. This is the second event they are sponsoring and we are already preparing for it. A team from Harare will be in Bulawayo this week to assess some of the possible routes to be used.
We encourage athletes to register so that they get more competition since we just came from Covid-19 enforced breaks,” said Madanyika.
The mobile network operator also sponsors one of the biggest and most popular marathons in the country, the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, which draws runners and fitness enthusiasts from all over the world.
The Buddie Beatz ‘‘Run The beat Virtual Marathon’’ will become an annual event and is part of Econet’s drive to support and promote local music talent. Proceeds from the race will go towards supporting and promoting local musicians.
The virtual marathon is supported by Econet’s Buddie Beatz Music App, a music streaming pioneer service in Zimbabwe, with more than 45 000 songs and more than 4 000 artistes signed up to the platform.
The platform is accessible to anyone from any mobile network locally and around the world, and it has brought the best exciting Afro and international music to Buddie Beatz customers globally.
Those wanting to participate in the Buddie Beatz “Run the Beat Virtual Marathon’’ have to pay $100 registration fee via EcoCash or using the Paynow payment portal.
