AT least 25 families from Budiriro suburb in Harare, who were affected by floods early this year, will be relocated to flats in Dzivaresekwa Extension, following completion of construction works recently.

The floods caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure, leaving many families stranded.

Addressing the media during the post-Cabinet briefing last Tuesday, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe, who spoke on behalf of Housing and Social Amenities Minister Zhemu Soda, said the 25 families had been identified after an assessment of all affected people.

“The flats can accommodate 67 families so once the flats have been commissioned, we expect the 25 families from Budiriro to move in,” he said.

The Government’s housing initiative aims to not only address the immediate needs of those displaced by disasters, but also create a long-term solution to the national housing shortage.

With more flats and housing units reaching completion stages, thousands of Zimbabweans can expect similar opportunities for secure and affordable housing.

These projects are being implemented as priority projects for the First 100-Day Cycle of 2024, which are building blocks towards the realisation of goals of transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy.

They involve the segmentation of big projects into smaller and manageable developments, done and completed in 100 days.

Giving an update on the 100-day cycle projects recently, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said the construction of the Dzivaresekwa Flats had been completed and now awaits commissioning.

“The construction of the Marondera flats in Mashonaland East is at 90 percent of completion, the construction of civil servants houses at Lupane in Matabeleland North has been completed and an application for electricity connection has been initiated, and the regularisation of informal stands at Lupane in Matabeleland North is at 65 percent of completion.

“Procurement of cement, paint and aggregates is in progress,” he said.

Government has also completed the construction of 17 core houses and ablutions at the Binga housing project while the construction of 4×4 storey blocks of flats and a waiting mothers’ shelter at Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe Mutawatawa in Mashonaland East is ongoing.

Dr Muswere also listed other projects that are under construction and will go a long way in addressing various challenges being faced by residents.

“The construction of the Dzivaresekwa civil works (roads, sewer and water) has been completed while the redevelopment of stalled buildings at Beitbridge is at 61 percent complete.

“The Bluffhill (Mashview gardens) project involving the construction of cluster houses, and facilitated by the Ministry (of Housing and Social Amenities) is expected to be completed by June 2024, the servicing of residential stands at Hopeville in Bulawayo has been completed and the servicing of 24 medium density residential stands at Old Windsor Park, Ruwa has also been completed,” he added.
