Build like a founder

Hunt For Greatness

Milton Kamwendo

Building something meaningful from the ground up requires a founder’s mindset.

This is a mindset that is driven by focus, discipline, resilience, passion and a bold mission. Founders translate vision into reality. They have a way of thinking that allows them to navigate through obstacles and uncertainty. They build with purpose and inspire others. In their book “The Founder’s Mentality”, Chris Zook and James Allen shed light on what it means to build with energy and focus, as a founder.

Whatever greatness you are building, you need to embrace this mentality.

The founder’s mentality has three core traits: an insurgent mission, an owner’s mindset and an obsession with the frontline.

Jeff Bezos

These principles guide how founders think, act and lead.

Daring mission

One of the defining characteristics of the founder’s mentality is having an insurgent mission. Founders are motivated by a desire to solve a problem or address a need in the world.

This mission is often deeply personal. It becomes a magnificent obsession and driving force. It is the force that keeps them going through difficult times and what sets them apart. Steve Jobs did not just want to sell computers.

His mission was to change the way people interacted with technology, and to make it more intuitive and accessible.

This mission became the foundation and the enduring driver of Apple Incorporated’s success and innovation. To build with the mindset of a founder, you need to have a clear mission that extends beyond the immediate.

Ask yourself: “What problem am I trying to solve?”, “Why is this mission important to me?”, “What impact do I want to make?”

When you are fired up by a greater purpose, it becomes easier to build through challenges.

Your mission makes building a massive momentum of greatness.

Owner’s mindset

The second key trait of the founder’s mentality is an owner’s mindset.

Founders take complete responsibility for their ventures. They are accountable for the success or failure of what they are building. They approach every challenge with the mentality that they have the power to make a difference.

This mindset fosters a culture of responsibility; one in which everyone is encouraged to take ownership of their work.

Founders are deeply involved in every aspect of the work that they are building.

They understand that the base of greatness is making informed decisions.

This sense of ownership cements their resourcefulness and creativity.

Founders are not limited by the resources they have. They make the most of what is available and find innovative solutions to problems.

You must be willing to take responsibility for your decisions and actions.

Embrace success and failure. Learn equally from both. Be proactive in finding solutions and thinking long-term.

The founder’s mindset is about being fully invested in the outcome, understanding that your commitment and decisions shape what you are building.

Frontline obsession

The third trait of the founder’s mentality is an obsession with the frontline.

Founders connect with the people they serve.

They value the customer and those who are on the frontline of delivering service and solutions. They make it a priority to understand their needs, listen to feedback and respond.

The connection to the frontline allows founders to stay grounded in reality and make decisions that reflect the true needs of the market. Jeff Bezos is the well-known founder of Amazon. Bezos has maintained an obsessive focus on customer satisfaction.

As Amazon grew into a global giant, Bezos never lost sight of the importance of serving the customer. In meetings, he would leave an empty chair to represent the customer’s voice.

Every decision had to be made with the customer’s needs in mind.

To build with the mindset of a founder, stay connected to the frontline. This means engaging with customers, listening to feedback, adapting and learning. As often as necessary, get out of the building and go to where the action is. Close connection with the frontline helps you stay agile, responsive and relevant.

Why this mentality?

The founder’s mentality matters because it creates a foundation for long-term success. Founders approach challenges with a sense of urgency, adaptability and resilience that allows them to overcome obstacles and seize opportunities. This mindset keeps them focused on their mission, accountable for their actions and deeply connected with the people they serve. Adopting the founder’s mentality enables you to navigate through disruption and change.

Pivot quickly, innovate effectively and maintain a sense of purpose as you build.

How to build

To build with the mindset of a founder, start by defining your insurgent mission.

Be clear about what you want to achieve and why it matters. This mission should be the driving force behind everything you do, providing direction and motivation. When your motivation is from within, you are unstoppable. Next, adopt an owner’s mindset.

Take responsibility for every decision and outcome. Take extreme ownership.

Be resourceful in finding solutions.

You have the power to make a difference.

Create a culture of accountability and creativity. Stay connected and grounded.

Engage those you are building with, and those who support you.

Listen to feedback, because it is the breakfast of great people. Keep learning from the feedback and feed-forward that you receive. Take grounded decisions, stretch and keep building. Build brick by brick to your greatness.
