Bulawayo Athletics Board to host first track and field championships at White City Stadium

THE Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) is ready to host their first track and field championships at White City Stadium on Saturday.

The athletes will be drawn from all the country’s provinces and the registration fee is pegged at US$2.

Bab chairperson Watson Madanyika says they are looking forward to the event.

“We are excited to get going in the field and track events. We encourage schools, clubs and universities to come and take part in the event which helps athletes get a picture of where they are in terms of fitness levels ahead of the season,” said Madanyika.

Athletes will compete in 100m, 200m, 400m, 1500m, 3000m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4×100m, triple jump, long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin.

Meanwhile, Bab in conjunction with the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) is set to host a Level One coaching and officiating course at White City Stadium starting on Thursday.

It will be a three-day course.

The entry fee is pegged at US$50 per participant, however, the fee is not inclusive of lunch and can be paid in cash or deposited into the Bab bank account.

Speaking to Zimpapers Sport, Madanyika said it will be a great way to start the year as such courses help to develop athletics from the grassroots up to the national level.

He added that they are expecting a huge turnout for the course with participants expected to be drawn from around the country.

“Equipping aspiring coaches and referees with the necessary knowledge and skill is of paramount importance and is a great way to start the 2024 athletics year.”
