A BULAWAYO nightclub bouncer has appeared in court facing an assault charge after allegedly repeatedly striking a fellow bodybuilder and Taekwondo expert with a stone, leaving him with serious head injuries.
Jackson Mwanza appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Ms Sibonginkosi Mkandla and was remanded in custody to October 21.
The court heard that the alleged attack occurred on September 27 at about 3.30 PM along Station Road in Thorngrove, where Mwanza allegedly struck Ricky Chimwemwe Tembo on the forehead with a stone, knocking him to the ground.
Prosecuting, Ms Nkanyezi Xaba told the court that Mwanza allegedly continued attacking Tembo after he fell.
“The accused person hit the complainant, Ricky Chimwemwe Tembo, with a stone once on the forehead and he fell to the ground. The accused did not stop,” she said.
The court heard that Mwanza allegedly picked up more stones, sat on Tembo and struck him several times on the head and face.
Tembo bled profusely before losing consciousness. He was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment before a police report was subsequently made, leading to Mwanza’s arrest.
Mwanza has previously faced assault allegations. In 2016, when he was working as a bouncer at a local nightclub, he faced two assault charges arising from separate alleged incidents involving a doctor and a police officer on the same night.
The doctor reportedly sustained injuries after Mwanza allegedly slapped him several times and pushed him to the ground.
A police officer stationed at Mpilo Central Hospital’s police post also accused Mwanza of assaulting him after the bouncer allegedly accused him of dozing off at the nightclub.
Mwanza denied the allegations at the time, arguing that the doctor had behaved inappropriately towards a stripper and that he had been carrying out his duties as a bouncer. He also accused the complainants of fabricating medical reports.
