THE Bulawayo Chess Association was successfully launched on Monday during the city clubs’ annual general meeting at a local hotel.
In an interview after the launch, secretary general, Brighton Duburu said the formation of the association will help steer the sport to another level as they have been operating without a governing body.
“We have been doing well without a mother body, so the establishment of the association should go a long way in improving the sport,” he said.
Duburu said they had received overwhelming support from the clubs and the corporate world.
“The launch was a success. It was received with open arms by the clubs and even the corporate world,” said Duburu.
He said the association would have to source sponsorship for next season’s tournaments and league which is on the cards.
“We are working on sourcing sponsors for our association so that we have a smooth chess season next year,” he said.
He said their main mission was to encourage more women to take part in chess.
“We have a handful of women playing chess. Our duty as an association is to map a way to encourage more of them to join chess.
“We are making plans to introduce incentives for those who will be taking part in tournaments,” he said.
Bulawayo Chess Association is led by chairman Thabang Moyo who is being deputised by Gibson Manhuru of Bulawayo Polytechnic.
Russell Dzute is the director of public relations while Moses Mutipforo was elected director of finance.
Committee members are Knowledge Ndlovu, Dalithemba Ndlovu and Hope Ndlovu. The association comprises clubs like Bulawayo Chess Club, National University and Science Technology, Zimbabwe Power Company, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe School of Mines and Bulawayo Polytechnic.
