THE Bulawayo Children’s Choir has honoured the late hip-hop kingpin, Mgcini “Cal_Vin” Nhliziyo, with a heartfelt tribute song titled Awu Yeiye (The Refix). The track, a creative reinterpretation of Mathias Xavier’s classic Tormented Soul, celebrates Cal_Vin’s immense contribution to Zimbabwe’s music industry and positions him as a shining star in the nation’s cultural landscape.
Choir director Trevor Mawaka said the tribute was inspired by a desire to celebrate the life of a distinguished musical icon, who proudly represented the City of Kings. Cal_Vin, an award-winning rapper from Bulawayo, rose to prominence in 2014 and was widely celebrated for putting the city’s music scene on the map, as well as for nurturing emerging talent through his record label.

Tragically, he passed away on the night of October 24, 2020, from injuries sustained after being run over by a car.
“This song is a remembrance of the late Cal_Vin. We reworked Tormented Soul by adding harmonies, new verses and a modern touch to keep his spirit alive. It’s a celebration of his legacy and of all the legends who shaped our musical heritage,” said Mawaka.
He revealed that the concept for the track was born five years ago, shortly after Cal_Vin’s untimely passing, driven by a passion to ensure his name lives on.
As part of the music video production, one choir member impersonated the Z’khuphani hit-maker, styled in an outfit that echoed his signature fashion sense.

“Our lead vocalist’s resemblance to Cal_Vin was intentional. It was a deliberate effort to recreate his iconic look as a way of paying homage to him. Zimbabwe lost a gem in him, and through this project, we wanted to revive and preserve his legacy,” Mawaka said.
He said Cal_Vin is remembered as a trailblazer and musical genius, who opened doors for younger artistes, including members of the Bulawayo Children’s Choir.
“He was one of the few who made it to the national stage, and his name deserves to be mentioned alongside other departed Bulawayo music legends,” said Mawaka.
