SOUTHERN Region Division One leaders Bulawayo City stretched their lead at the top of the table to five points after beating bottom placed club Mpumalanga 2-0 in Hwange. City affirmed their stay at the top by capitalising on second placed Bulawayo Chiefs and third placed Bantu Rovers’ slip. Chiefs and Rovers played a goalless draw in the Bulawayo derby.

City sit on 43 points from 19 matches while Chiefs have 38 points and Rovers 24 from the same number of games.

City got their goals from Innocent Kutsanzira and Ndodana Sibanda and club chairman Jerry Sibanda is happy with their performance, but warned his charges against complacency saying the league race was a marathon.

“We’re pleased with the development because that means a step further to our main goal. The boys played well as always but we mustn’t relax because we still have a long way to go.

“Ten games isn’t a joke and this five-point lead can disappear just like that with one loss,” said Sibanda.

Hwange Under-20 eased their relegation worries when they registered a 2-1 victory away to Trumus and moved five points ahead of second from bottom Old Nic Mine, who lost 0-3 to Amagagasi.

The Hwange juniors now have 14 points while Old Nic Mine are on nine points from 19 games.

Shupai Ngwenya and Peter Phiri scored in Makomo FC’s 2-0 victory over Nust propelling them into the top eight.

Casmyn FC and ZPC Hwange did not play after the Bulawayo-based mining team was involved in an accident at Gwamba Valley close to St Luke’s along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway.

Casmyn remain fourth on the league table with 32 points while ZPC Hwange are fifth and a point behind after 18 games.

Zifa Southern Region has already announced that their tie would be rescheduled to a later date.
