BULAWAYO Country Club will host the Ubuntu Junior Golf tournament on Saturday, which will attract over 80 participants from across the country. The event will promote golf in schools and encourage the development of junior players.
Ubuntu Junior Golf, a grassroots programme by Ranwa Golf Management, aims to complement national junior golf structures to establish the sport in schools.
The theme of the tournament “Say No to Drugs” is to keep young players off the streets by fostering their wellness and endurance levels.
The tournament will also promote friendships and the spirit of Ubuntu among the junior golfers.
Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub, tournament co-ordinator Wadzanai Mudzete said they are looking forward to an enthralling day of golf.
Mudzete encouraged all junior golfers to come in numbers and gauge themselves against players from different parts of the country.
“The idea of Ubuntu Junior Golf Programme is to encourage, develop and sustain junior golf talent identified from different areas, and backgrounds in Zimbabwe. We have always had avery good turnout by junior golfers at previous events in other provinces. This is our first event in Bulawayo,” said Mudzete.
“When we talk of bringing junior golfers to the golf courses, we should use all programmes that can lead our future golf stars to spend more time playing the sport. All junior golf programmes in the country will eventually feed the national junior golf team.
“We believe Zimbabwe has a deep base of raw, unearthed, pure young talent which all stakeholders in the golfing fraternity should strive to tap to make Zimbabwe golf a beacon on the continent.
“As we descend on Bulawayo Country Club this Saturday, we say to our hosting junior golfers in the province, come and play and make friends with your fellow junior golfers who you may be meeting for the first time, and let golf be the winner. Let’s create more opportunities for our juniors to enjoy golf, moulded by the spirit of Ubuntu,” said Mudzete.
The event will set the foundation for future Ubuntu Junior Golf tournaments in different cities in the Midlands and Mashonaland West provinces. — @brandon_malvin
