The Bulawayo creative community is mourning the death of young and promising artiste Stanford Bayana, who died yesterday.
Bayana was a member of local arts group Sekunjalo Ma Africa. The cause of his death was not immediately known.
In a statement, Sekunjalo Ma Africa confirmed Bayana’s death, describing him as a beloved member of the group.
“Sekunjalo Ma Africa is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved artiste, Stanford Bayana, today, 3 October 2026.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and fans,” the group said.
The news of Bayana’s death has left several creatives mourning the loss of a young talent whose work had earned him recognition in the local arts sector.
Ezimnyama director Phibion Dube described Bayana’s death as a loss to the creative community.
“The creative family has lost one of its own. We are heartbroken to learn of the passing on of Stanford Bayana, who was part of Sekunjalo Ma Africa.
“His art, spirit and contribution to the arts scene will never be forgotten. Rest in power,” said Dube.
Artiste Khotso Kolobe also paid tribute to Bayana, highlighting his impact on students and the spaces where he shared his art.
“Your art gave our walls a voice, and your energy brought so much joy to our students. Though your time with us was far too short, the colour, life, and passion you brought into our space will remain. Rest in power, Stan. Your canvas lives on,” said Kolobe.
Playwright and arts administrator Raisedon Baya, who mentored Bayana while he was still in high school, said the young artiste had died too soon.
“Stanford Bayana was way too young to go. Too young. The cards he dealt with were unfair. He battled. Rest easy, young man,” said Baya.
Bayana’s death has once again highlighted the loss of young talent in Bulawayo’s creative sector, with fellow artistes remembering him for his contribution to the arts.
Funeral and burial arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
