It was a memorable Good Friday for theatre enthusiasts as the Bulawayo Theatre played host to this year’s World Theatre Day celebrations in the city.
World Theatre Day, observed annually on March 27, was established in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It serves as a day to celebrate the transformative power of theatre and its ability to unite people from diverse backgrounds.
The event, held under the theme “Theatre and a Culture of Peace” underscored the profound significance of theatre in human life, offering myriad ways to explore and appreciate the beauty of existence. This year’s theme spotlighted the pivotal role of theatre in fostering peace, highlighting its capacity to bridge divides, promote understanding, and cultivate a harmonious cultural milieu.
Directed by Thandolwenkosi Ndlovu and made possible by the Bulawayo Theatre Club Committee, the celebration featured diverse acts including Asante Mo, Hloseni Arts, Khaya Arts, Amaqaqa, Market Dreams, Charlie’s Chocolate Factor, and “Isiphelo sohambo” written by Mzingaye Ngwabi, which delved into the grip that religion holds.
The performances, characterised by vibrant music, dynamic dance routines, and compelling plays, demonstrated that Bulawayo is steadily progressing towards international standards. Every participant contributed to making the event memorable for the audience, signaling Bulawayo’s continued ascent in the world of theatre. If this momentum persists, Bulawayo will undoubtedly solidify its position among the theatre hubs of the world. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu.
