STRAIGHT from playing inmates at Khami Prison in a charity match last weekend, the Bulawayo Football Legends, a group of ex-footballers that played for various Premier Soccer League clubs, will be hosting the Masvingo Football Ambassadors at Luveve Stadium this weekend.
The match is part of efforts to foster good relations between former professional players that hail from different parts of the country to partake in charity work in their capacity as football ambassadors.
The Bulawayo Football legends donated second hand clothes, sanitary ware and food items to inmates after the match at one of the country’s biggest prisons, situated on the outskirts of Bulawayo.
Formed last year, the Masvingo Football Ambassadors is a relatively new club, and secretary general George Charumbira says they can learn a lot from their Bulawayo counterparts on how to use football as a tool to mobilise resources for the less privileged.
“The Bulawayo guys have been around for a while and have organised a number of successful charity games so we want to use the Saturday game as a learning curve on how we can also use our influence as former footballers in Masvingo to assist the less privileged.
“Our team consists of a number of former football players, coaches and administrators who are still involved in the game in different capacities so we believe we have the right people that can an important role in assisting the under privileged through charity matches and tournaments,” said Charumbira.
Former Masvingo United, How Mine and Manica Diamonds coach Luke Masomere, currently on a sabbatical after losing his job in the Manicaland Province based PSL side, is part of the Masvingo Football Legends and will play in the Saturday match.
The Bulawayo Football Legends has players such as Herbert Dick, a former Amazulu defender, Johannes Ngodzo, a crowd favourite at Highlanders and the Warriors in his playing days, Zenzo Moyo who was known for his scoring prowess at Bosso among others.
A return match is penciled for next month in Masvingo, where the teams will make a donation at a-yet to-be identified Old People’s Home.
