THOUSANDS of Roman Catholic congregants from across Zimbabwe and beyond, yesterday, gathered at Hartsfield Ground in Bulawayo for the church’s annual choral competition.
The event honours Saint Cecilia, the Catholic Church’s patron saint of music, a tradition observed worldwide.
This year’s celebration drew thousands of participants, church leaders and families, bringing vibrancy as choirs showcased their talents. Many combined traditional and modern instruments, reflecting the rich musical heritage found within Zimbabwean Catholic communities.
Mr Ignatius Tawanda Mapanzure, Vice-Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Catholic Association of Sacred Music (Zicasam), explained that the festival rotates annually among different dioceses.

“This year, the Archdiocese of Bulawayo is hosting the festival. Last year, it was Harare and next year it will be in Mutare,” he said.
“Today, we had 30 choirs from across Zimbabwe and one choir from Johannesburg, South Africa.”
Mr Mapanzure emphasised that the event is premised on the idea of unity and spirituality among Catholics.
“Coming together helps us have unity as Roman Catholics. It lifts our spirits because we are praising and worshipping as one family,” he said.
The competition awards prizes not only to the best choirs but also to outstanding individual performers. Judges assess choir performances based on vocal harmony, presentation and adherence to church music guidelines.
Saint Cecilia’s Day holds special significance in promoting sacred music and encouraging youth participation in church choirs. Over the years, the festival has grown both in size and popularity, with more choirs and attendees joining the celebration.
