BULAWAYO is hosting Social Protection Week, organised by the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare in conjunction with the Southern African Social Protection Experts Network (SASPEN), with delegates from several African countries attending.

The programme features the annual SASPEN Conference, which brings together policymakers, experts, development partners and practitioners to discuss the future of inclusive social protection.

Countries represented include Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Ethiopia.

Held under the theme, “Reimagining Social Protection: Emerging Challenges, Fiscal Constraints, Shifting Trends and Strategic Opportunities”, the conference is focusing on how best to protect vulnerable members of society amid limited government funding and other emerging challenges.

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and Midlands State University (MSU) are also participating in the conference.

During the two-day conference, delegates are expected to present papers and engage in discussions, while participants from across the region share experiences and approaches to social protection in their respective countries.

The conference is scheduled to be officially opened this Thursday by the Deputy Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Advocate Mercy Maruva Dinha.
