THE City of Bulawayo on Wednesday presented its proposed interventions for improving the management of the Richmond Landfill and addressing the growing challenge of illegal vending to Bulawayo Metropolitan Affairs and Devolution Minister Judith Ncube and members of the Joint Operations Command (JOC).
A delegation led by Deputy Mayor Councillor Edwin Ndlovu and Town Clerk, Mr Christopher Dube, briefed Minister Ncube and other stakeholders on strategies to transform the management of the Richmond Landfill through partnerships with the private sector.
Mr Dube said engaging private investors to manage the landfill is in line with the policy direction of the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works and is expected to improve waste management efficiency while promoting environmentally sustainable practices.
The delegation also toured several illegal vending hotspots across the city and inspected proposed sites identified for the relocation of informal traders.
The proposed relocation follows a research exercise conducted by the local authority to determine the number of traders operating illegally and identify suitable designated trading areas.
Following the engagements, Minister Ncube and the City of Bulawayo agreed that an emergency planning meeting involving the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, the local authority and other key stakeholders would be convened to map out the relocation process.
