Bulawayo has become the first city to embrace information communications technology and artificial intelligence following the commissioning of CCTV surveillance cameras to curb criminality in the Central Business District.
The CCTV cameras were commissioned on Tuesday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the commissioning, Police National Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi said,
“What is happening today, is a milestone, a compliment by the people of Bulawayo in terms of the government’s approach that says no one should be left behind, we now have an issue if smart policy and city being embraced in the Bulawayo city,” said Comm Nyathi.
“All along we have been grumbling with issues like criminality, where you found that people are mugged particularly at night, when they are coming out from late clubs, shopping centre or after work while going home”
Comm Nyathi said the CCTVs will go a long way in reducing crime in the city.
“Any form of criminality will be effectively monitored from a control sector and the police will respond, this also include the issue of vehicles that caused chaos and that commit crimes they will now be tracked,” he added.
“We are happy with what has been done by Bulawayo and, the partnership that has done by the church community and the police, and we hope other towns and cities will embrace what they have seen in Bulawayo because we have seen unity of purpose and common versions in terms of fighting crime in Bulawayo, so that the country can continue have peace and stability,” he said.
