A 56-year-old man from Bulawayo has appeared in court facing allegations of repeatedly raping his 44-year-old sister who is mentally ill.

The accused, from Mpopoma suburb, whose name is withheld to protect the identity of the complainant, appeared before Western Commonage Regional Court regional magistrate Pasipanodya Maturure charged with rape.

He was remanded in custody to March 24 for trial.

Prosecuting, Ms Melissa Dube told the court that sometime in 2025, the accused allegedly raped his sister, with whom he stays, on several occasions.

The court heard that the matter only came to light in December when the complainant confided in the accused’s ex-wife about the alleged abuse. The ex-wife informed the complainant’s elder brother in March this year.

A police report was subsequently made, leading to the arrest of the accused.

The complainant was later taken to hospital for a medical examination as part of investigations.
