A 27-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo man who threatened to kill a woman with a broken bottle before robbing her of a cellphone has been sentenced to an effective eight months in prison.
Nkosiyazi Mpofu of Njube suburb was convicted of robbery by Western Commonage magistrate Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube.
He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, with four months suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period, leaving him to serve an effective eight months.
Prosecuting, Mr Tafara Dzimbanhete told the court that on September 4 at around 4PM, Mpofu followed the complainant, Fundisani Moyo (28), through a bushy area near Entumbane Complex.
Mpofu approached Moyo, threatened to kill her with a piece of broken bottle, stripped her and searched her before taking her Samsung A04 cellphone and fleeing.
The court heard that as Moyo was making her way to the Entumbane Complex police base to report the robbery, she spotted Mpofu at the Entumbane Complex parking bay.
She alerted members of the public, who apprehended him and handed him over to the police.
A search conducted on Mpofu led to the recovery of Moyo’s Samsung A04 cellphone.
