BULAWAYO Polytechnic has come up with a new dress code, banning certain types of attire on campus and at all functions hosted by the institution outside campus.

Bulawayo Polytechnic students

According to a notice to students issued, two weeks ago, ripped jeans, blouses that leave the stomach out and string, sleeveless and off shoulder tops and dresses are not allowed.

It also stated that tops and dresses that reveal cleavages and the back, biker and bum shorts; skin tights and other tight-fitting clothes, see through clothes and skirts, shorts and dresses that are more than five centimetres above the knees will also not be allowed.

The notice further said no one is allowed to wear caps in class and offices and no male student is allowed to wear any head gear except on religious grounds.

Dropping of trousers and shorts and wearing slippers is not allowed by the institution.
In the notice, Bulawayo Polytechnic Principal, Mrs Chiedza Masanganise said the students’ dress code is in line with institution’s mandate to train and groom professionals for commerce and industry.

She said if the students are not properly dressed, they will be asked to “correct the dress code” before being allowed to access Bulawayo Polytechnic facilities and lectures.

Mrs Masanganise said the institution encourages the students to be dressed according to their trade.
A Bulawayo Polytechnic students’ leader who declined to be named for fear of victimisation said most students are not happy with the dress code as it is “unfair and unreasonable” and the institution did not consult them. -@ReeSibanda
