ZANU-PF Bulawayo provincial chairman Cde Jabulani Sibanda has challenged Government to consider employing health workers who are sign language proficient in every shift at health facilities across the country.
Speaking at a party district meeting organised by Zanu-PF Bulawayo Province (Greens District/City Centre) yesterday, Cde Sibanda said sign language was still marginalised, despite its importance and being part of national languages.
“I don’t understand how we are failing to use sign language especially within our health delivery system yet it represents a very important part of our population. I challenge the Health Ministry to ensure that in every shift in every health institution, a person who is proficient in sign language must be employed,” said Cde Sibanda as he addressed over 400 party members from the district.
His sentiments were echoed by district chair Cde Tendai Charuka who said the meeting had been called as part of efforts to mobilise party membership. He said the district had some members who are disabled and are not being adequately serviced by health institutions.
“This meeting was called as part of our efforts to mobilise membership. In my district we have several members who are disabled and not accessing key health services because of several reasons and sign language is among them,” said Cde Charuka. — @RealSimbaJemwa
