BULAWAYO is set to make a splash this weekend as it plays host to the much anticipated EcoCash Sprint Gala, with organisers confident of a flawless event.

The Bulawayo Amateur Swimming Association (Basa) says all is in place for the national meet, which runs from October 17 to 18 at the Bulawayo City Pool. More than 400 swimmers from 23 clubs are expected to compete in the 50m and 100m races across all strokes.

Basa vice chairperson Watson Mhlanga said the city was ready to deliver a high standard competition, an event traditionally hosted in Mutare.

“We are well prepared to host this sprint gala, which is normally held in Mutare.

“We have four Bulawayo clubs participating and one from Botswana, and we’re looking forward to kids breaking records and setting new personal bests,” he said.

Mhlanga added that the record turnout reflects the sport’s growth.

“We used to have 220 to 240 swimmers, but this time we’ve doubled the entries, which is really pleasing,” said Mhlanga.

The gala will also serve as a test of the swimmers’ winter training, with athletes hoping to meet South African qualifying time standards.

Medals will be awarded to the top three performers in each age group.
Last year’s champions, Vikings Swimming Club, set the pace with a strong showing, 228 points in the boys’ category and 209 in the girls’.

Mhlanga urged local fans to come out and support the young athletes.

“We’re calling on the Bulawayo community to come and cheer the swimmers. It’s going to be a great weekend of competition,” he said.
