BULAWAYO’S growing fitness culture is set to receive a major boost with the launch of the Kings Half Marathon, a new road race sponsored by Flash Beverages’ Bux Energy Drink and its sole distributor in the southern region, Budget Cash & Carry Wholesale.
The inaugural event has been scheduled for October 31 and will be held in Bulawayo, although organisers are yet to announce the official route and venue. What is already clear, however, is the ambition behind the event, with organisers hoping to turn it into one of the city’s biggest annual sporting fixtures.
Named after Bulawayo’s popular title as the City of Kings and Queens, the Kings Half Marathon is expected to attract runners from across the country, bringing together seasoned athletes, weekend joggers and first-time participants in a celebration of fitness and community spirit.
The launch comes at a time when increasing numbers of Zimbabweans are embracing healthier lifestyles. Across the country, more people are taking part in jogging clubs, fitness challenges, social runs and organised races as awareness grows about the benefits of exercise and active living.
Organisers believe the Kings Half Marathon will tap into that growing interest while creating a platform that promotes not only sport but also wellness and social interaction.
In a joint statement, Flash Beverages and Budget Cash & Carry Wholesale said the event was about much more than crossing the finish line.
“The Kings Half Marathon is more than just a race. We want it to become a celebration of health, fitness and community spirit. Bulawayo has a rich sporting heritage and we believe this event will provide an exciting platform for both professional and amateur runners to come together.”
The organisers said the long-term goal is to build a race that becomes a permanent feature on Zimbabwe’s athletics calendar and draws participation from runners across different age groups and backgrounds.
“Our vision is to make the Kings Half Marathon an annual event that athletes and fitness enthusiasts look forward to every year. The inaugural race on 31 October marks the beginning of what we believe will be a lasting tradition for Bulawayo and Zimbabwe as a whole.”
For many local runners, the announcement could not have come at a better time. Bulawayo has long been recognised as one of Zimbabwe’s sporting centres, producing talented athletes across various disciplines. However, many road-running enthusiasts have often expressed the need for more high-profile races in the city.
The Kings Half Marathon aims to help fill that gap by providing a professionally organised event that caters for all levels of participants. While competitive runners will have the opportunity to test themselves over the demanding distance, organisers are also keen to create an atmosphere that welcomes recreational runners looking to challenge themselves and enjoy the experience.
The backing of Flash Beverages adds another dimension to the event. The company has established itself as a notable player in Zimbabwe’s energy drink market through products designed to combine natural ingredients with the energy boost sought by active consumers.
Its Bux Energy Drink has gained popularity among consumers thanks to a formula that includes organic caffeine sourced from green tea and coffee beans, as well as a blend of vitamins and minerals aimed at supporting energy and performance.
Organisers say the partnership between Bux Energy Drink and Budget Cash & Carry Wholesale reflects a shared commitment to promoting healthy and active lifestyles within communities.
“As a brand, Bux Energy Drink promotes energy, performance and determination, values that align perfectly with long-distance running. Through this marathon, we hope to inspire more people to adopt healthier lifestyles while also creating an event that showcases Bulawayo as a destination for sport and wellness.”
Beyond the race itself, organisers are hoping the event will bring people together. Families, friends, fitness clubs and corporate teams are all expected to be part of the occasion, creating a festival atmosphere around one of the country’s newest sporting events.
The marathon also has the potential to provide a boost for Bulawayo’s local economy, with visiting runners and supporters likely to support businesses in the hospitality, transport and retail sectors.
Although details of the route are still under wraps, anticipation is already beginning to build within local running circles. With just a few months before the starting gun fires, many runners are expected to begin preparations for what promises to be a memorable test of endurance.
For Bulawayo, the race represents more than another sporting event. It is an opportunity to celebrate the city’s proud sporting tradition, encourage healthier lifestyles and create a new annual occasion that residents can call their own.
If the organisers succeed in delivering their vision, the Kings Half Marathon could become a fitting addition to the sporting calendar, living up to its royal name and earning a place among Zimbabwe’s most anticipated road races for years to come.
Bulawayo Athletics Board chairman, Watson Madanyika confirmed that Kings Half Marathon had secured the date and are in the process of sending invitations to athletes and clubs. He said he is excited about an extra race added onto the scene.
