BULAWAYO Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) is set to host a sevens rugby festival at the city’s ceremonial home of rugby, Hartsfield Rugby Grounds that will feature different schools as well as clubs from across the country on December 3.
Named “Unforgettable Sevens Rugby Festival” after the board partnered with the corporate giants Unforgettable, the tournament will bring a close to the city’s rugby season.
The tournament will feature high schools, women and men’s rugby teams. Some of the schools that will feature are Christian Brothers College (CBC), Milton Boys High School, Midlands Christian College (MCC), Petra College, and Plumtree High School.
There will also be a developmental side for under-13s and 14s which will feature a number of western suburbs schools. Local rugby clubs will also be in participation including invited teams from Mutare and Gweru.
BMRFB director of rugby and former national sevens coach Gilbert Nyamutsamba said they are looking at closing the season on a high note thus the festival which is coming up. He also said they are also looking at knowing where to start next season.
“On the objectives, we are looking to close the season on a high level and where development is at so that we know where to start at next season,” said Nyamutsamba.
With admission set to be free for everyone who wishes to attend what promises to be a fun day of rugby and also having stalls at the venue, Nyamutsamba said they are looking at creating awareness so that people know that the sport is still alive.
“We want to also raise awareness and remind people of Bulawayo and corporates that rugby is still there,” he said.
With the season concluded, the former national sevens coach said he is happy with the way things went during the time having played lots of rugby in the term which included 15s and 10s tournaments.
Nyamutsamba promised a big family day where rugby gives back to the community and the new season is expected to bounce back in the second week of January next year. – @brandon_malvin
