THE Bulawayo Provincial Civil Protection Committee has convened a three-day disaster risk contingency planning workshop to assess the city’s preparedness to respond to emergencies ahead of the rainy season.

The workshop, which will be officially opened by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, is focused on strengthening disaster response mechanisms as the country prepares for the rainy season amid concerns over the possible effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon.
The meeting brings together stakeholders involved in disaster management to review existing response systems and develop practical measures to mitigate the impact of potential disasters.

Bulawayo local government director Mr Tapiwa Zivoivoi said preparedness required coordinated efforts across Government departments and other relevant stakeholders.
“We must make sure our response systems are always ready. We must also develop practical systems and this needs a whole-of-Government approach,” he said.
