Bulawayo women’s soccer suffers

BULAWAYO-based side Queen Lozikeyi and Borrow Jets have not had a pleasant start to their season in the Zimbabwe Women’s Soccer League.

Both sides are in the relegation zone after 14 matches.

Queen Lozikeyi anchors the 16-team log with three points after winning just one game out of the 14 they have played while Borrow Jets have only two victories from their 14 matches.

The poor performances is a cause for concern and one coach who refused to be named said women’s football in Bulawayo is collapsing.

“Women football teams in Bulawayo are struggling and there is urgent need to address the problem which is mainly due to lack of financial support. If you look at Bulawayo Chiefs’ Ladies team last season, you would understand my point.

“They had a strong team but lack of funding let the girls down after a year of hard work,” said the coach.
He said teams like Herentals Queens, Harare City Queens, Black Rhinos Queens and Platinum Royals were enjoying good financial support hence they were doing well.

Queen Lozikeyi and Borrow Jets are hoping to improve on their performance this weekend after a long break.

They were not part of the four teams that played last weekend after their matches were postponed.
Meanwhile, at the top it is still a tight race for glory as six points separate Harare City the leaders with fourth placed Correctional Services Queens.
