ZIMBABWE Under-19s were handed a bruising 107-run defeat by a dominant South Africa side in the Tri-Nation Under-19s Tournament at Harare Sports Club, a result that heaps pressure on the hosts in the race for a place in the final.

The gulf in quality was evident from the start. South Africa’s innings was anchored by a classy 130 from Muhammed Bulbulia, who needed just 93 balls to compile his century. His knock, featuring 11 fours and a six, mixed aggression with smart strike rotation and gave Zimbabwe’s bowlers little to work with.

Jorich Van Schalkwyk (63) and Adnaan Lagadien (58) added to the damage, both playing with fluency and confidence. Van Schalkwyk struck six boundaries, while Lagadien peppered the ropes 12 times as South Africa posted an imposing total that kept Zimbabwe chasing shadows.

In reply, Zimbabwe showed glimpses of fight but were never really in the contest.

A 69-run stand between Michael Blignaut and Simbarashe Mudzengerere offered brief hope, but once that was broken, the innings unraveled. Zimbabwe eventually folded for 239, never threatening the target.

South Africa’s bowling unit delivered a clinical performance, varying their lines and lengths with discipline. Enathi Kitshini stood out, conceding just 11 runs in two overs and picking up a wicket, while his teammates kept the pressure on with tight lines and sharp fielding. Several dismissals came from smart catches and well timed run-outs, reflecting South Africa’s intensity in the field.

The defeat leaves Zimbabwe in a must win situation if they are to remain in contention for the final.

Coach Elton Chigumbura faces a tough task regrouping his side, especially with question marks over their batting depth and ability to handle pressure. Zimbabwe will need to find stronger partnerships and tighten their bowling plans to bounce back.

South Africa, meanwhile, head into their next fixture with momentum firmly on their side and their eyes on the tournament trophy.
