Detectives from the CID Border Control Unit, acting on a tip off, arrested the suspects who were aboard a South African bound bus, Citiliner.
Four of the nine suspects were Citiliner workers, who were on the bus at the time of the arrest and were reportedly fully aware of their illegal cargo.
The four-Citiliner workers allegedly identified their five accomplices. CID Border Control Unit Harare Regional co-ordinator Detective Chief Inspector Jameson Magodora said investigations were still in progress.
“Responding to a tip off from the public we were able to lay a trap for the suspects at a tollgate near Mbudzi,” he said.
Detective Chief Insp Magodora said they searched the bus and discovered six tonnes of copper cables in the luggage trailer.
Meanwhile a Chitungwiza man, who swindled a desperate homeseeker of US$4 000 , has been ordered to perform 420 hours of community service at Zengeza 3 Clinic.
Innocent Kanyama (45) of 8 Kure Close, Zengeza duped Knowledge Chichoni of his money on the pretext that he was selling Stand 32132 Unit N for US$4 000.
The town’s magistrate Godfrey Unzemoyo slapped him with a 32-month jail term but 10 months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Another two months were suspended on condition he pays restitution by October 7.
