BUS operators will be applying the full range of public health measures to minimise the spread of Covid-19, as the fourth wave, partly fuelled by the new Omicron variant, hit Zimbabwe last week.
Last week, President Mnangagwa announced an extended lockdown measures and ordered the measures already in place, but widely ignored by too many complacent people, to be enforced.
Bus operators converged last Friday to decide on how best they can ensure the safety of passengers.
Zimbabwe Passenger Transport Organisation chairman Dr Sam Nanhanga said: “As ZPTO, we have converged to come and make sure that from today (Friday) onwards we are going to buttress the Covid-19 regulations which include the sanitisation, temperature checking and masking up.
“We have made a duty roster that we have grouped our members so that they will go on the ground and monitoring to make sure that everyone is being sanitised, having their temperature checked and is wearing a mask before boarding the bus. They will also make sure that each bus is complying with set regulations.”
Mr Nanhanga said operators were ready to do this even without police intervention.
“This will go a long way in ensuring the safety of the passengers as well as that of the bus crews.”
Dr Nanhanga said bus operators were keen to see passengers getting vaccinated.
“Vaccination is the only way to protect the country and we encourage people, both our bus crews and members of the public to embrace the jab,” he said.
